"It is estimated that 95 million American adults over the age of 20 have total cholesterol levels higher than 200 mg/dL and nearly 29 million American adults have total cholesterol levels higher than 240 mg/dL.1The high number of individuals with hypertriglyceridemia, about 1 in every 4 American adults, has led to an increased interest in omega-3 formulations. Omega-3s have been found to decrease triglyceride levels by 20-50%. This article will discuss the various omega-3 formulations, such as food, over-the-counter (OTCs), and prescription formulations, as well as important counseling points for pharmacists."
