by Amolee R. Patel, PharmD, BCPS, BCIDP
"With an estimated incidence of over 600,000 cases annually, bloodstream infections (BSIs) pose a significant challenge to patients and healthcare providers. Even with advances in the diagnosis and management of infectious diseases, BSIs consistently rank among the top ten causes of mortality in the United States with rates nearing 20% depending upon the pathogen and burden of infection. BSIs are also an important cause of community-onset sepsis, metastatic complications, and recurrent infections, leaving little room for error when managing these infections in clinical practice."
