Implementing USP <795> Revisions in a Rural Health System: Perspective from a Pharmacy Resident

The United States Pharmacopoeia (USP) develops standards for compounding nonsterile medications to reduce risks of infection, contamination, and incorrect dosing, and to ensure patient safety. The field of pharmaceutical compounding is constantly evolving, and USP revises its standards regularly. The USP published revised General Chapter <795> Pharmaceutical Compounding – Nonsterile
Preparations (CNSP) on November 1, 2022, which became official on November 1, 2023.1 Major changes to the standards in USP <795> include assigning a designated person to be accountable and responsible for the compounding facility’s operations; garbing; cleaning standards; training every 12 months; and minimum beyond-use dating (BUD). As a PGY-1 pharmacy resident, I gained firsthand exposure to incorporating USP <795> revisions into pharmacy practice by working with various pharmacists and settings throughout my residency year.
