by Victoria Stang, PharmD, MHA, Rebekka Rantanen, 2025 PharmD Candidate, Alyssa Woodall, 2025 PharmD Candidate, Aman Patel, 2025 PharmD Candidate
Abstract:
Digital health, an innovative division of healthcare, integrates digital technologies to enhance patient care, improve access, and reduce costs. This article delves into digital therapeutics (DTx), a subset of digital health, which provides evidence-based therapeutic interventions to manage, prevent, or treat health conditions. Examples of DTx utilization are available for various disease states, such as diabetes, anticoagulation, mental health, and respiratory health. Despite promising advancements, there are barriers to DTx adoption, such as lack of awareness, lack of affordability, lack of insurance coverage, lack of technological literacy, regulatory challenges, and difficult integration into existing healthcare systems. There is a need for comprehensive education and training for healthcare providers, streamlined integration with electronic health records, and supportive reimbursement policies to enhance DTx accessibility and utilization. With these challenges addressed, DTx can revolutionize healthcare delivery, empowering patients and providers alike.
