CE for Pharmacists & Technicians: Comprehensive Insights into Androgenetic Alopecia: Pathophysiology and Therapeutic Interventions

by Jonathan B. Baranowski, 2027 PharmD Candidate, Kassandra M. Bartelme, PharmD, BCACP

Abstract:
Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is a common and progressive condition causing hair loss and thinning. This review provides an overview of current pharmacological treatments, alternative natural products, and non-pharmacological approaches along with their proposed mechanisms. Additionally, current perspectives on the pathophysiology of AGA are explored, focusing on common hallmark components and their mechanisms and pathways.

By analyzing the latest research in clinical practice and biological processes, this review offers a comprehensive understanding of AGA, aiming to showcase potential points for the development of novel drug and non-drug therapeutic targets through understanding of pathophysiology and current drug mechanisms.

Learning Objectives:
  • Define the three main components of the pathophysiology of androgenetic alopecia.
  • Describe possible contributing causes and differentiating diagnoses of androgenetic alopecia.
  • Deduce possible secondary health issues related to hair loss.
  • Compare and contrast pharmacological treatment options, including mechanism of action, dosage formulations, and evidence of efficacy.
  • Evaluate nonpharmacological, surgical, and natural product options, including mechanism of action and evidence of efficacy.
