Artificial Intelligence and Pharmacy Practice: History, Current Uses, Limitations, and Future Directions
by Gillian Fogt, BS, 2027 PharmD Candidate
According to the Oxford English Dictionary, artificial intelligence (AI) is defined as “the theory and development of computer systems able to perform tasks that normally require human intelligence, such as visual perception, speech recognition, decision-making, and translation between languages.” It can create systems that can replicate human intelligence and problem-solving abilities. AI programs are able to take in data, process it, and learn from the past. Recently there has been a surge in AI tools used in everyday life, such as virtual assistants and search engines. In this paper, we discuss how AI can impact pharmacy practice. This review will discuss the history, current uses, limitations, and future directions of artificial intelligence.
